Lesson 20 Healing of a Leper Matt 8:2-4, Mark 1:40-45, Luke 5:12-16

Jesus' healing of this leper is awesome and captures what he did when he saved us.

INTERNET CHALLENGE: Go to wikipedia.org/wiki/Leprosy and clip and print the picture of the leperous man and the leper colony to show to your class. Go to http://www.webster-dictionary.org and look up ogre, clip the picture and show your class what sin is and what a selfish old ogre looks like.

TEACH RESPONSIBLY: = Don't miss a detail of these accounts of this leper's cleansing. And especially its connection to our sin. The MAIN POINT IS: I was like that leper, I was dying in a leper colony of sin when I came to Jesus and he healed me. He can heal anyone of this terrible disease.

Lesson Outline:

  1. He was a leper, leprosy is a disease of dying

    1. The leper's flesh is literally dying in place and rotting off the bones.

    2. The finger & toe bones begin to wear because there is no circulation, no feeling and no pain.

    3. Leprosy is highly contagious and you must not go near nor touch anyone, you must not allow others to touch you, and you must cry Unclean, Unclean when someone comes near.

    4. You cannot go home nor live with people who do not already have leprosy so you live in what is called a leper colony

  2. Discuss how leprosy is similar to what you had when you were unsaved

    1. As a sinner every part of me was dying in place and rotting, sin destroys

    2. As a sinner my dying parts had no circulation, no feeling and no pain.

      1. When I disobey my parents – a part of my integrity dies, some have disobeyed so much all integrity is dead and only rebellion is left

      2. When I tell a lie – a part of my honesty dies, some have lied so much all honesty is lost and no one dares trust them..

      3. When I am selfish and prideful – a part of my kindness dies, some have been so selfish for so long that all their kindness is gone and they are selfish old ogres.

    3. Leprosy is highly contagious and you must not go near nor touch anyone, you must not allow others to touch you, and you must cry Unclean, Unclean when someone comes near.

    4. You cannot go home nor live with people who do not already have leprosy so you live in what is called a leper colony

  3. The leper first came and worshiped him

    1. Many teach that man cannot come to Jesus, Jesus must go to them. They are wrong.

    2. The leper first came to Jesus, worshiped Him AND believed Jesus could heal.

  4. Jesus simply said I will be thou clean … and immediately …

  5. What does healed leprosy look like?

    1. The death is gone, the white dead flesh is restored to new.

    2. When the death of sin is gone we need not continue in that death of disobedience, lying, and selfishness

  6. What does the healed leper live like?

    1. He does not go back to the colony and live, he lives in a whole new society of people

    2. When the death of sin is gone you cannot go back and live like you used to live, you now live in a whole new society of people, people who love the Lord and worship Him.

  7. See thou tell no man but go and shew thyself to the priests! Why? And What is the application to the new convert?

  8. Offer the gift that Moses commanded,

    1. Where was this commanded? What was the offering? What was the purpose?

    2. What is the application to a new convert?
