Lesson 21 Healing of a Paralytic Matt 9::2-8, Mark 2:1-12, Luke 5:17-26
Jesus' healing of this leper is awesome and captures what he did when he saved us.
INTERNET CHALLENGE:
TEACH RESPONSIBLY: Don't miss that this is still in the very early stages of Jesus' public ministry. Notice the gathering of Pharisees and doctors of the law (scribes) and the theme that the one who can heal can forgive sins, because he is God in the flesh.
Lesson Outline:
The gathering of bigwigs to hear Jesus
In Capernaum and noised about in Mark 2:1, called 'his own city' in Matt 9:1
Pharisees and doctors of the law out of every town of Galilee, Judea and Jerusalem, Lk
Many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room Mrk
The bringing of the lame man
Sick of the Palsy is one who was paralyzed, and confined to a bed
Roofs were generally open access and walked upon as another room, picture the situation with a description that will stick in a head for life.
Mark says that he was 'borne of four', perhaps they were:
Faithful Frank
Virgil Vision
Prayerful Pat
and Willing Worker
'Jesus saw their faith' Matt, 'saw their faith' Mrk and 'saw their faith' Luke
The forgiveness of sin “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.”
Jesus had a point to make, that the Son of Man can forgive sin.
The Son of Man is the Son of God,
He was claiming all the authority of God to forgive sin
Scribes (Dr. of Law) and Pharisees (teachers of Law) recognized it as blasphemies
'Jesus knowing their thoughts Mat; 'And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves' Mrk; 'Jesus perceived their thoughts' Lk
Jesus did not use omniscience to know their thoughts, he used perception
We have access to all the perceptions that Jesus had and used while in the flesh.
The paralyzed man walked, don't miss the amazement
It is a proof of who Jesus was, and the fact that he could indeed forgive sins
I was an unprecedented miracle, a paralytic man made to walk!
Because He had compassion and mercy on the sick
Because He saw the faith of the four.
